Everything You Want to Know About Machine Applique

What to bring:

Fabric: fat quarter for background

1/8 yard or fat 1/8 for flowers (I have used one print for all five flowers, but you certainly    could mix it up if you like.)
Assorted scraps for the leaves and stems
Fat quarter for vase and border
5” x 8” scrap for vase accent
4” square for flower centers

Kit : Provided in class. The kit includes preprinted fusible stabilizer/foundation for the appliqué (Wash-Away Appliqué Sheets from C&T), master pattern for the little quilt you see above and a special appliqué tool.

Small scissors for fabric and thread

Thread to match appliqué fabrics: I have found the finer threads will disappear the best, making your machine appliqué appear to have been sewn by hand. I like Presencia 60 wt but you may wish to try other brands. I have a friend who favors Isocord that matches the appliqué fabric. You may want to experiment with an invisible thread. I recommend a poly so it won’t melt when you press your block. You might also consider a contrasting thread for a decorative affect. This is the perfect time to play and decide what you like the best.

Glue stick – I really like the new Roxanne’s Glue Stick and the Quilters Select glue stick from Alex Anderson.

Basting glue – I am partial to Roxanne’s Glue Baste-It. I can deposit a very fine dot, it really holds and it washes out.

Sewing machine, cleaned and oiled. Don’t forget your foot pedal and power chord. If you have a BERNINA, please bring your #20 open toed foot. You may also use #23. If you have a different brand machine, please bring your appliqué foot (something with open toes or clear plastic so you can see what you’re doing is the best – I think even a MUST!)
